Nat Spier
Nat Spier

Nat has 40+ years in the Charlotte area as a musician, teacher, arranger/producer, and recording engineer. He perused music studies at UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Charlotte. He started a local band, The Rivieras, in the eighth grade. The Rivieras are still performing, now under the leadership of Smitty Flynn. Nat played bass, guitar, tenor and bari sax with Chuck Berry, bluesmen Jimmy Reed and Johnny Taylor, The Platters, Drifters, Clovers, Temptations, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and others. After college his studies included jazz piano with Ziggy Hurwitz, arranging and orchestration with Allan Kaufman, and saxophone technique with Phil Thompson at Winthrop College. He has been teaching guitar and sax in Charlotte and Monroe since the 70’s. Nat has been with Howren Music for 13 years.

Nat believes strongly in helping the guitar student understand concepts such as “key,” “scale,” and “chord progression.” He almost exclusively uses the student’s favorite artists and groups for examples. Nat endeavors to show his guitar students how notation/tabulature is valuable in advancing and achieving their goals. With his Saxophone students , Nat tried to reinforce and clarify what the student does at school and offers special help should they want to move into jazz and beginning improvisation.

His varied musical career includes several national tours with vocalists of both the Met and New York City Opera, hundreds of shows (playing flute as well as clarinet and sax), and many variety band productions. He had his own solo woodwind act for over a year at the Omni/Radisson Uptown Plaza Hotel in Charlotte, and has performed at almost every Carolina military base as a member of both the Jerry Goodman Band and T.P.M. Productions (Greensboro).

Rich has played saxophone with the Charlotte Symphony and is currently a member of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra where he has recently been appointed acting principal / section clarinetist.

You can now see Rich in concert on YouTube - enter the password "dreamwaves2rg" to experience his "vision" of conceptual art and live performance.

Rich used both the traditional method and jazz improvisation and can incorporate virtually any musical style into the lesson.
